Job Responsibilities

Deliver high-quality assessment and safeguarding services for children, young people, and families within the Duty and Assessment Team.

Complete Child and Family Assessments and develop Child in Need (CIN) and Child Protection (CP) Plans in partnership with families and multi-agency professionals.

Undertake complex casework involving safeguarding, risk assessment, care planning, and statutory intervention.

Work collaboratively with partner agencies, community services, and long-term social work teams to ensure coordinated support for children and families.

Apply restorative practice approaches when engaging with children, families, carers, and professionals.

Ensure children, young people, and families are fully involved in assessments, planning, and decision-making processes.

Safeguard and promote the welfare, health, and wellbeing of children and young people at all times.

Manage cases within statutory timescales and in accordance with local and national policies and procedures.

Undertake complex assessments to identify risks, unmet needs, and protective factors.

Develop and implement outcome-focused support and care plans.

Prepare high-quality written reports, assessments, court statements, and case conference documentation.

Represent the Local Authority in court proceedings, strategy meetings, child protection conferences, and other statutory forums.

Provide mentoring, support, and practice guidance to ASYEs, apprentices, students, and less experienced staff.

Support the supervision and development of junior team members and contribute to reflective supervision activities.

Chair meetings including strategy meetings, core groups, placement planning meetings, and PLO meetings where required.

Maintain accurate and timely case records in line with departmental and statutory requirements.

Participate in team meetings, service development activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Deputise for the Principal Manager where required and provide operational support to the wider team.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

Qualified Social Worker with recognised Social Work qualification.

Registered with Social Work England.

ASYE completed with a minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience in Children’s Social Care.

Significant experience working within Duty and Assessment, Child Protection, and Children in Need services.

Experience undertaking complex safeguarding and assessment work with children and families.

Strong knowledge of children’s social care legislation, safeguarding procedures, and statutory guidance.

Experience of restorative practice and its application within children’s social care.

Ability to undertake complex assessments, care planning, and risk management.

Experience preparing court reports, assessments, and presenting evidence in court.

Ability to manage complex caseloads within statutory timescales.

Strong communication, relationship-building, and multi-agency working skills.

Experience supporting, mentoring, or supervising less experienced staff, ASYEs, or students.

Ability to work effectively under pressure in a demanding frontline environment.

Strong IT and case recording skills.

Ability to travel across the geographical area as required.

Desirable Requirements

Experience deputising for management or senior leadership within Children’s Services.

Practice Educator qualification or experience supervising Social Work students.

Experience chairing strategy meetings, core groups, and planning meetings.

Knowledge of education, housing, and wider related legislation impacting children and families.

Experience contributing to service development and performance improvement initiatives.

Advanced understanding of child development, disabilities, and safeguarding interventions.
